Bones grow old with us, but we must admit that to some, they are healthy, strong, young, heavy and others brittle, riddled with "rare". Osteoporosis, i.e. riddled bones,is one of the most common diseases of the bones, especially in later life and ... women.
"Grandma got up from his chair and broke his leg." This happens. Osteoporosis occurs in 25 % of women after menopause. And at least 26 % of women over 60 years of age have riddled the bone, which is the cause curvature of the spine, pain and weight loss. These symptoms occur in women in 4 times more often than men, however, and that is the problem, especially in deep old age.
One of the biggest challenges so far was to determine the moment when the state, which could be called the beginning of osteoporosis. In other words, how not to miss the moment when the dice will irrevocably cast your calcium blood and when they need help to get this item from the outside.
The search for answers to this and similar questions was addressed by the doctors of the Center of rehabilitation in the state of new York. 10 years of hard work, during which they studied the bones of thousands of patients and hundreds of them were cured, allowed them to publish their findings.
The loss of bone calcium is a gradual process, very slow and insidious. Coming with food calcium does not compensate their losses. Sometimes it is because it is too little, sometimes because, although we receive calcium abundantly, as an organism it is not digested or absorbed only partially (for example, in violation of the functions of the endocrine glands). The most visible symptom of the leaching of calcium from. bones are a pain in them or arbitrarily, without cause, brittleness (fragility). Under a magnifying glass, such bones look like a sponge or as a sieve, hence the name.
Dr. Albanese with employees have found a simple way to determine the condition of the bones. Dr. Albanese conducted an experiment with 12 female volunteers aged 79-89 years, the bones which were especially riddled. In the control group not receiving additional calcium and vitamin D, bone density at the same time decreased from 90,3 to 84,2 %.
However, there has been no side effects. The level of calcium in the blood and urine remained within normal limits. It was not revealed, for example, the formation of kidney stones , or any other signs of calcium deposits in the body. Unexpected effect was only a striking decrease in the level of cholesterol in the blood during the first 12 months of treatment. The old women did not have to fear sclerosis or heart attack.
Later, the experiment was repeated with 14 healthy female volunteers, hospital workers, aged 36 to 62 years. Here the results were mixed. Striking effect was observed in 62 - and 48-year-old women: they have for 36 months bone density increased to 120. One of the women bone density was 88 (considerably less norms adopted for 100), and after treatment with calcium and vitamin D for 22 months it has increased to 115, which even exceeded the norm.

How much calcium should be taken daily to prevent osteoporosis? A group of scientists headed by Dr. Albanese believes that the recommended norm is 800 mg per day is too small.
