The oocysts of coccidia

Coccidiosis is a protozoan disease arising out of the coccidia (protozoa) in the epithelium of the small intestine and is characterized by a violation of the functions of bowels and development of General phenomena. Coccidiosis in humans is rare. In the USSR isolated cases of coccidiosis were registered in Uzbekistan, in the Caucasus, in the Crimea. The source of infection - man troop faeces oocysts of coccidia (Fig). The incubation period 6-10 days. Clinical phenomena enteritis, enterocolitis (see). The diagnosis is based on findings of oocysts of coccidia in the faeces of the patient. Treatment is not developed. Prevention is the same as when other protozoal and infectious intestinal diseases.
