Corticosteroids - steroids adrenal cortex. It is known more than 40 corticosteroids, only some of them (especially hydrocortisone, aldosterone) are steroid hormones, other products of their metabolism. A precursor for the synthesis of corticosteroids in the body is cholesterol, and the synthesis process is under the control of the pituitary gland.
On the physiological effect of corticosteroids can be divided into three groups. Corticosteroids first group - glucocorticoids (hydrocortisone, corticosterone, and others)-increase the blood glucose and glycogen in the muscles and liver, while slowing the collapse of glucose into muscle tissue. The effect of glucocorticoids on the exchange of protein in two ways, such as hydrocortisone stimulates the formation of protein in the liver and inhibits this process in the muscles. The second group of corticosteroids - mineralocorticoids, or so-called metalloceramic (aldosterone) - regulates water-salt metabolism. The third group includes corticosteroids, identical hormones (see) or close it (estrone, androstene).
