In the early twentieth century Russian scientist P. I. the machine, exploring the Phenomenon of winter hibernation in animals in natural conditions, found that in the body of these animals is a sharp decline in the activity of all organs. They feel as if in a state of "slow" life. P. I., the machine produced a series of experiments proved the possibility to create time-lapse life, or animation, and such a warm-blooded animals, which under natural conditions this state unusual. He gave the animal carbon anesthesia, and then put them in cold chambers or covered with ice. This caused a lowering of body temperature even to a lower level, than at natural hibernation. P. I., the machine was reduced body temperature bats to - 9 degrees, and then brought them to life. He thought it possible in the future, with the development of science, creation of suspended animation and highly organized animals - in monkeys and even in humans. That vision is now completely justified.
Hypothermia has entered into medicine. This method of artificial lowering of the body temperature, causing a significant slowdown in all life processes in the tissues, reducing oxygen consumption of hindering the functioning of the Central nervous system. In the result of hypothermia all tissues and cells temporarily cease their specific activities, while maintaining their viability and ability to complete functional recovery after the temperature rise to normal levels. In other words, energy consumption by the body during artificial lowering its temperature is so reduced that the suspension of supply oxygen to all tissues of the body, and especially the most sensitive to oxygen starvation of the brain does not have such destructive actions, as in normal body temperature.
Over the last 15-20 years in many countries are held on a large scale research and published works, confirming thoughts about the use of the cooling in the medical purposes.
The largest surgeons many countries use this method as a means of warning operating shock or as strong painkiller. With the use of hypothermia was possible to conduct complex intracardiac surgery in cases when the patient's condition does not allow to use the ordinary General anesthesia or when the operation is so long and complicated that despite anesthesia, due to strong excitation of the nervous system in a patient may come as a shock. In these conditions play an important role peculiar hypothermia factors, namely a decrease in the exchange processes, slower breathing and heart activity, a decrease in the sensitivity of the organism.
In our country the method of artificial cooling is already firmly established in surgical practice and found recognition from such major surgeons, as C. S. Girgolav, P. A. Kupriyanov, A. N. Bakulev, A. A. Vishnevsky, A. C. Gulyaev, B. C. Peter and others who successfully produce the most complicated heart surgery in hypothermia.
To artificially lower the temperature and slow down everything that happens in the body processes, the patient is lined with ice or immersed in a bath of water with a temperature of 4-5 degrees. Some surgeons use a special blankets with tubes, which flows cold water.
It is known that a sudden cooling is injury to the body. Therefore, before cooling experimental animal or person, which is a complex operation, enter a small amount of narcotic substances. This means the body no longer responds to the cold.
