Methodology of comprehensive studies of alcoholism

Comprehensive socio-hygienic study of alcoholism undertaken in the mid 70-ies of the Department of social hygiene and public health organization II molgmi (Y. P. Lisitsyn, N. Ya Hoofs, the VP Bokin, C. G Zaporozhchenko, O. P. Chikida, E. S. Skvortsov).
The main purpose of the performed study was to examine current trends and patterns of alcohol abuse and development of recommendations on improvement of the system of organization of alcohol and alcoholism.
As can be seen from Fig. 1 the research was conducted in the following directions:
1. A study on the prevalence of alcohol abuse among the different age-and-sex and social groups of the urban population and industrial workers.
2. Explore the effects of alcoholism and alcohol abuse.
3. Identification of factors and causes that contribute to the abuse of alcohol and development of alcoholism.
4. Analysis organizational forms and methods of struggle with alcoholism.
The developed program covers a rather wide range of issues and provides a range of approaches and techniques (statistical, sociological, clinical, social, socio-hygienic and other). In particular, the research program includes the analysis and generalization of the extensive literature and official material on the consumption of alcoholic beverages and the prevalence of alcoholism in the USSR and abroad; a copy and statistical study of the materials of medical institutions (psycho-neurological dispensaries, emergency medical services, hospitals and medical units and bodies of public order (police, medical sobering-up station); surveys of specific population groups and study their conditions of work and life; the survey of the public and family members; clinical and social survey of alcohol abusers; evaluation of effectiveness of measures of social and medical impact on them; study of forms and methods of the identification of the persons who abuse alcohol and organization of monitoring.
The study consisted of several stages.
At the first stage on the basis of data on the consumption of alcoholic beverages per capita and the number of patients with alcoholism 25 economically developed countries, obtained from literature and official material, traced modern trends and patterns of drug addiction and alcoholism abroad and in the USSR. Were studied materials about the incidence of alcoholism and alcoholic psychoses for 1969-1971 in 9 cities of the country (Moscow, Kiev, Almaty, Ashgabat, Krasnodar, Mogilev, Tselinograd, Izhevsk, Cheboksary), which conducted the study of health in connection with the population census of 1970
This is a prerequisite for in-depth statistical study of the prevalence of alcohol abuse among the different age-and-sex and social groups of the population of Moscow according to the psycho-neurological dispensaries, medical sobering-up stations and stations of emergency medical care. The sample is "abusing" was formed by mechanical selection of persons whose names begin with the letter "E". Information collected by one-time copies of data for 3 years of primary medical documentation mentioned institutions on a special "Map abuse alcohol" followed by alfabetizaciyn information on one person. It is possible to obtain a well-defined group or alcohol abusers, to establish a relation between the drunks and the sick with alcoholism, and to determine the intensity of accumulation of the latter.
Study contingent "abuse" has been identified as a whole and separately on each of the three contingents taking into account gender, age, social status, education, occupation, length of accounting in the mental hospital, the number (ratio) of deliveries in the holding cell and maintenance by ambulance in a condition of alcoholic intoxication, the nature of the diseases for which they have been served, and other characteristics.
