Kwashiorkor - sharp nutritional disorder in children, caused by a long protein starvation and meals predominantly carbohydrate food. Kwashiorkor is distributed among the local population of Africa, Central and South America, Asia. Among Europeans only in rare cases symptoms of kwashiorkor caused by chronic diseases. Kwashiorkor can be observed in children at any age, but most often up to 5 years.
Pathological changes: fatty liver, atrophy of the pancreas, as well as common degenerative changes in all organs and in striated muscle.
Clinical picture: underweight, stunting, swelling, discoloration, or red skin tone, hair, dermatitis, hair loss (Fig.), vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea during the first weeks of the disease, alternating with constipation. Feces mixed with undigested lumps. Changes in the gastrointestinal tract caused by the reduction of its enzymatic activity.
The prognosis of the disease in the absence of treatment often poor.
Treatment is the appointment of a diet, rich in protein, vitamins, intravenous protein hydrolysates, plasma. It is also shown therapy enzymes, hormones.
