Modern approaches to the treatment of alcoholism

In our country the treatment of alcohol is carried out by the narcological service.
In 1987, there were over 400 narcological dispensaries. There are 125 thousand beds for treatment of alcoholism, of which 86 thousand beds in hospitals at industrial enterprises. The number of doctors-narcologists reached 7 thousand people (Romanenko, 1987).
One of the main trends of development of drug treatment services is its approach to the population. With traditional hospital-institutional forms of treatment are successfully competing hospitals in industry, agriculture, construction organizations. One of the advantages of this form of treatment of alcoholism is to restore employment skills in the course of work therapy, widely practiced in such hospitals. At industrial enterprises there are such forms of treatment, as day hospitals and night sanatoriums for treatment of alcoholism. In rural areas are organized inter-district narcological dispensaries, which cover several neighboring regions. Successfully working and self-supporting subdivisions rendering narcological assistance.
Promising and development of different variants of anonymous treatment of alcoholism. Anonymous medical institutions are of interest primarily for patients with initial symptoms of social intact patients. Free outpatient treatment is organized already in most narcological dispensaries. In addition, there is a possibility protivokashleva treatment without registration for individual patients voluntarily seeking treatment (persons of young age, drivers and others). Today you can go also and in-patient treatment without registration. Patient alcoholism without direction from the place of residence may apply for help at any substance abuse treatment facility, including in the clinic all-Union scientific center of medical and biological problems of narcology, located in Moscow.
Alcoholism is a complex disease. This illness is formed by patients on the basis of the use of alcohol.
In practical terms, all patients suffering from alcoholism, can be divided into two large groups. Some want to be cured and are actively looking for help, others refuse treatment. The effectiveness of treatment in the first group is certainly higher. In relation to the patients of the second group, it is often necessary to apply compulsory treatment, the results are much more modest. Activity of the patient, aimed at curing, a complete rejection of alcohol, is also one of the main conditions of treatment. Unfortunately, this activity and a sincere desire to improve business met infrequently. Sometimes voluntary externally treatment for drug-actually the result of serious pressure from relatives of the patient. To treat a patient who refuse treatment, intending after the completion of therapy to drink "slowly",is very difficult. Doctors, of course, try to use all available means to influence the patient, to form a desire to be treated, for the full sobriety, but this is not easy. The doctor held his half way meet him have our half way and ill - then success is guaranteed. Doctors say his patient: "We are two, but the disease alone. If we at the same time - we are able to win."
Doctors are able to achieve practical recovery from alcoholism. Practical recovery means that the patient can be compensated almost all offences related to alcohol consumption. After treatment, the patient can live a normal life and work in the society, to have healthy children.
However, the patient ever use alcohol - recovery followed by a relapse. Pathological "alcohol mode body is not forgotten completely and immediately activated. "Alcohol homeostasis" recovered very quickly and once again dominate not only the body but also the mind, the personality of the drinker.
Why not destroyed without a trace stages of alcoholism? Sometimes people remember someone's face, and only once seen them. How can you forever "forget" the body alcohol-dependent type of metabolism in which it existed years? How to destroy forever the most powerful dominant pockets of excitation in the psyche? Scientists today are looking for the answer to this question.
