Therapeutic physical culture - independent medical discipline that uses the tools of physical culture for the prevention of relapse and treatment of many diseases and injuries and rehabilitation. The specificity of medical physical culture in comparison with other methods of treatment is that it uses as a primary remedy physical exercise, which is a significant stimulant vital functions of the human body.
Therapeutic physical culture should be considered as one of the elements of a modern complex treatment. Under the complex treatment refers to tailor treatment methods and means, providing the change of reactivity in a positive way, improvement and restoration of functions of diseased organ or system. Complex treatment affects not only the diseased tissues, organs or systems of organs, but also on the whole body. The share of the various elements of a comprehensive treatment depends on the period and the clinical course of the disease. During clinical recovery and the need for rehabilitation of the person undergoing a particular disease or damage, the essential role in complex treatment belongs medical physical culture, as the method of functional therapy. Exercise, regardless of where they are applications that affect the responsiveness of the whole body and are involved in the overall response mechanisms that are involved in pathological process. In this regard, medical physical culture can be called by the method of pathogenetic therapy.
Therapeutic physical training involves conscious and active implementation of sick appropriate physical exercise. In the course of employment by them of the patient acquires skill in the use of natural factors of nature with the aim of hardening, accustomed to adherence movements of physical exercise with the medical and preventive purposes. It allows to consider the application of physical exercises with the purpose of treatment of medical and pedagogical process.
Therapeutic physical training uses the same tools and principles on the use that, and exercises for a healthy person. B. it is based on the principles of the Soviet system of physical education, namely the principles of full impact of prikladnoi and Wellness trend. Thus, in its content therapeutic physical training is an integral part of the Soviet system of physical education.

In the middle ages exercise for therapeutic purposes has been widely used.
In the further development of medical physical culture played a major role prominent Tajik scientist Abu Ali Ibn Sina (Avicenna). He theoretically justified the application of physical exercises with the medical and preventive purposes, the use of solar and air baths and described a number of gymnastic and applied exercises.
