Formic acid

Formic acid (HCOOH), a very simple single-base carboxylic acid. Colourless liquid with a pungent smell; soluble in water, ether , and alcohol. May cause burns to the skin. Contained in the needles of spruce, nettles, secretions of some animals and insects (ants, bees and other). Involved in intermediate metabolism.
Formic acid is used as an antiseptic in the food industry.
