Respiratory virus infection

Among infectious human diseases most often are influenza and other respiratory viral (flu) infections. They are all caused by the smallest pathogens - viruses, which in the case of infection settle on the mucous membranes of the respiratory, or respiratory, ways; the defeat of the latter is the most common and characteristic manifestations of these diseases. That is why they are called respiratory infections.
According to official statistics, the incidence of influenza and of influenza-like infections in the USSR in comparison with all other communicable diseases 4.9 times higher. Especially often these infections affect children. In Moscow the children get sick 3 times more likely than children of preschool age, and 5 times more likely than adults. Often these diseases are usually severe and can lead to the development of serious complications, and sometimes fatal, especially in infants. So, with little overall number of deaths associated with influenza-fourth of them in the course of the epidemic 1957 and half during the outbreak of 1965 were the children of the first year of life.
But even in the mild course respiratory viral infections weaken the children's organism, reduces its resistance against other diseases, contribute to the occurrence of exacerbations of chronic processes. They increase the body's sensitivity to various harmful factors, "open the gate" for pathogenic microbes are the most common cause of pneumonia and the formation of chronic respiratory diseases in children.
So the idea of innocence light of the Cathars, the widespread among children, it is necessary to admit a mistake. These infections deserves great attention to prevention of their need to mobilize all of our efforts.
Among respiratory viral infections in the first place as the most serious mass disease is the flu, or influenza *. The incidence of this infection occurs constantly. Every 2-3 years there is extensive flu epidemic, during which affected a considerable part of the population and especially children. After the termination of the epidemic in the period before new rise of influenza morbidity completely does not stop, but only dramatically reduced. At this time among all mass respiratory viral infections on the flu is not more than 5-15%. Influenza infection is as if in the state of corruption, so that after some time to become a new epidemic fire.
Periodically through greater intervals due to the appearance of new strains of the pathogen are developing so-called pandemic influenza, covering all or almost all countries and continents of the globe. In 1918-1919 the whole planet was affected by pandemic influenza, called the Spanish flu since the first reports about him appeared in Spain. During the pandemic flu 500 million and killed about 20 million people. Many remember the flu pandemic of 1957 - 1959, called Asian in connection with the fact that for the first time mass morbidity it was revealed in Asia. For two years in different countries have been ill from 20 to 60% of the total population. Unlike the "Spanish flu" mortality from the Asian flu was small. The last pandemic was in 1968 (Hong Kong flu).
Influenza after the latent period (duration 2 days) begins acutely and usually manifests itself by a rapid rise of temperature, severe headache, severe weakness, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite; in young children often observed vomiting and cramps. On 2-3-day is often joined signs moderately expressed Qatar Airways: a runny nose, cough, sometimes hoarseness. Average disease duration 3-5 days. The severity and nature of the manifestations of the disease vary widely. Along with the gravest forms, which can be fatal, occur very mild forms of influenza, which transferred patients "on the ground". The flu can be complicated (especially often in small children) defeat of the larynx with symptoms of shortness of breath (flu-like cereals), pneumonia, ear infections, lesions of the nervous system. After the fall of the temperature some time children feel weakness, sometimes insomnia; they quickly get tired and have increased irritability. In this period due to the weakening of organism and reduction of its resistance to easily join other diseases. After an influenza immunity for the period of 1.5-3 years.
Among other respiratory viral diseases, most often affecting children, should be called parainfluenza, adenovirus and the so-called respiratory syncytial infection.
