Sanitary protection zone

The sanitary protection zone - zone of the gap between industrial enterprises and the nearest residential or public buildings with the purpose of protection of the population from the influence of harmful factors.
Developed hygienic requirements for the establishment of sanitary protection zones in the area of industrial productions. All enterprises, depending on the degree of hazard emitted into the atmosphere of industrial emissions, the degree of perfection of technological processes, the availability of treatment facilities are divided in the USSR for 5 classes. The width of the sanitary protection zone for each of them is characterized by the following values: I class - 1000 m; II - 500 m; III - 300 m; IV-100 m; V-50 M. the Width of the sanitary protection zone in each case can be increased at the request of bodies of sanitary-epidemiological service in case of impossibility of effective interventions to reduce the concentration of harmful substances emitted to the atmosphere from industrial emissions, up to specified levels, especially at the location of residential areas downwind in relation to the enterprises polluting the atmospheric air. At the same time, in the presence of improvement of technological processes in production, effectively reducing air pollution by industrial waste, sanitary and epidemiological services may be reduced to the known limits of the width of the sanitary protection zone.
In all cases, gases and other harmful emissions from industrial enterprises, reaching beyond the sanitary protection zone of housing estates should not exceed the established levels of maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) and to influence the health status and living conditions of the population.
