Academician Evgeny Chazov: "we Have to move!"

The name of academician Yevgeny Ivanovich Chazov known in our country and abroad. Know him and how big a cardiologist who has returned many patients to active life, and as a research scientist, and as a prominent public figure, one of the founders of the international movement "Physicians for the prevention of nuclear war". But, despite employment, E. I. Chazov agreed to meet with a reporter to talk about the role of physical education and sports in the life of modern man.
- The subject is extremely necessary and urgent. Because we now live in special conditions, and these conditions have specific demands. They cannot ignore, if we want to preserve the health and stay as long as possible useful to the society in which we live. I believe in this, and as a doctor, a scientist and as a person, who used to work a lot.
With this recognition began the conversation, held in the all-Union cardiologic research centre, who for many years headed by academician I. E. Chazov.
Yevgeny Ivanovich, what, from the point of view of the physician, do you see modern man?
- First of all it must be healthy in order to solve problems facing it difficult task in conditions of permanent emotional and mental stress. This is the main and the primary condition. And so today we have to talk about the comprehensive development of man. The causes of diseases, poor health often lie in a one-sided development of the individual. Of course, leaves its mark and profession. For example, people of intellectual work - accountant, scientist, teacher, engineer - lead sedentary lifestyles and, therefore, more prone to cardiovascular diseases. Workers working in different conditions, they are more common lung disease, spinal column, and so on, that's why in our country such attention is paid to harmonious physical development of people. This process starts from a very early age.
We must not forget that twenty to thirty minutes of daily physical exercise is not only the key to strength and health, and success in the workplace, the building of character. That's why Leo Tolstoy, the great physiologist Ivan Pavlov and many others, whose names are inscribed in Golden letters in the history of the human race, before the end of his days had the time and opportunity for exercise.
- XX century, the technological revolution, the progress of technology, design safeguarded the majority of people from hard labour, facilities, comfort have become common in our daily life. What is necessary to compensate the lack of movements?
- This is an extremely acute problem. We very quickly come to grips with the facilities that we provide transport. We are used to the Elevator and other vehicles, is practically completely deprived us of the required load. All this leads to physical inactivity is a phenomenon that affects humanity today. Recently I had the opportunity to participate in the international meeting of experts of the world health organization. Scientists of many countries of the world discussed various factors that contribute to cardiovascular disease so prevalent in the world today. It is established, that one of the most important is lack of exercise.
We know that man, his body was formed and developed in the conditions of a difficult, sometimes dangerous struggle with the forces of nature. This requires good physical training, agility, courage.
Modern man no less, if not more, for some reasons is exposed to the effects of stress. But natural and much needed exercise, acting as a counterweight, relieving the negative impact of the environment, we are obviously missing. So we have to move, not to avoid exercise. When the famous American cardiologist Paul white visit us in Moscow, he never used the Elevator, trying to walk to the right address. In your own house he recognizes no transport and moved only by bike. And believe me, this is not a whim of a spoilt person, and the struggle for life extension. No medications are not able to replace the movement. Today many understand this simple truth.
All, without exception, I recommend walking duration 30-40 minutes. I am convinced that this is the most useful, the most effective exercise that supports the tone of life at the right level.
- What, in your opinion, physical culture and sports should take in life?
- The greatest resource of any society - creative thinking and creatively working people. Each of us is called to improve their knowledge and skills. But this is not enough. You need to constantly strengthen and their health, strength of muscles. I can't think of a modern person's cultural, if he is not involved in physical culture, studying it is a necessary condition for long workability, creative and active thinking.
- How the sport went in and comes into your life?
I like sports and childhood are connected with it. While studying in the Institute I was one of the best in Ukraine runners on long distances. Hard and for long hours practicing. I am sure that it played a great role in my life. For me sports and to this day is one of the best means of character.
Not wish expressed my thoughts were perceived as concerns third-party person. I am fond of walking, winter necessarily go skiing, deal with every day gymnastics - in short, try to fill in the deficit of the movement.
- What can you as one of the leaders of the international organization "Doctors for nuclear war prevention" can you say about the role of the international sports movement, the Olympic games in the struggle for peace?
- All that brings people together for a noble purpose, it is helpful to the cause of peace, good neighborly relations. In this regard the sport and the Olympic games play a prominent role. I remember well the Moscow Olympics, which, despite the efforts of the supporters of the "cold war", were a striking success. Once again received confirmation of the truth that the meeting of athletes from different countries not only reflect the desire of the people to an understanding, but also contribute to its strengthening. This is perhaps the most important role of sport in our turbulent times.
